My Apple Genius Bar Experience

I never write reviews. But this experience was strange. If you work at Apple and want to look this up, my ticket was from 11/24/22, under “J C”, at the Grand Central Apple Store in NYC, and the last four digits of my phone number are 8947.

My Macbook Pro, bought brand-new from Apple, three years old, died on 11/24/22, seemingly out of nowhere. I can’t turn it on at all.

I brought it to the repair department at the Apple Store. The employee I met with would not give me a quote for repair unless I signed a digital form saying I was prepared to lose my data. Through my inquiry, I found out that I can still opt out of the repair if I don’t like the quote after signing the said form. So I signed. I was then given a quote of just under $600 for the repair. I believe it was around $587 to be more exact. I was told that it could be possibly less or more, but that in agreeing to the process, Apple was entitled to the full base quote, just for running diagnostics, even if I don’t want a full repair.

What was notable, is that the employee’s stoic attitude was truly disturbing, and dare I say dystopian. I’ve only owned this laptop for 3 years. I was looking for this employee to simply say, “I’m sorry this happened to you. I understand it must be frustrating to have your equipment fail after only 3 years. I’ll make a note that this computer was purchased not too long ago, and I’ll kindly ask that they consider that in your final quote.” If this employee simply said that, I would have given Apple my business. But said employee’s stoic attitude screamed, “I am vague because you are about to get scammed, and I’ve adopted a stoic attitude, so I can mentally survive scamming people.”

Because of this employee’s inappropriate stoic attitude, I politely excused myself and opted out of the repair. And I will be seeking quotes at well-reviewed third-party repair shops instead for this repair. And I will inquire at said third-party tech shops about what products to buy in the future that have notably good OEM support because, sadly, Apple does not.
