Picking Your Master

Joe Camerota
2 min readDec 17, 2024

I believe in God because I believe our person is an illusion created by our brain. That illusion requires a master because, as it is an illusion, it is ultimately uncertain.

I believe a person’s freedom depends on an individual being able to choose their own master.

Picking your own master is the ultimate expression of your person. It is choosing where to put your hopes.

And when your master is God, good people see that, and they don’t try to be your master. Instead, they try to have what you have. They try to have their master come from within, the same as you, despite their uncertainty because you are doing it despite your uncertainty.

I truly believe I awoke when I realized that all people were simply making life up as they go to the best of their knowledge and ability.

And when I admitted that to myself, I began to trust that my own relationship with God, and whatever I make that, would be as good as it gets.

Many people don’t want the responsibility of failure, so they never bet on their relationship with God. Choosing instead to hope on the gods of another’s wants to create opportunity for them. When people bet on their relationship with God, they know they must look like a fool until God proves them right.
